Our chosen route for 2011 takes the walker through the spectacular and remote Glen Feshie on the western side of the Cairngorms on the 25th of June. This area is described by many as 'The jewel in the crown of the Cairngorms'. Soaking in the spectacular scenery of this wide upland glen; flanked by the highest natural tree line in Britain, it is not difficult to see why. Indeed Glen Feshie (gaelic: Gleann Feisich) means "the sheltered place from the stormy blasts". In times gone by Feshie was a bustling glen, supporting many families, today the glen is owned by a single landlord. Natural woodland includes Scots pine, rowan, alder, birch and oak. The forest is home to squirrels, pine martin, black grouse and golden eagle.
This year's walk enjoys a circular route; initially climbing through woodland and then descending into the glen with spectacular views across the Moine Mhor to the high Munro tops of Braeriach and Cairn Toul. Our route then passes close by the big estate house and then rises up on a good track to the west of the Glen into open heather moorland. Finally, the route swings back to the north passing remains of civilisations gone by, arriving back at our starting point Corarnstilbeg. The distance of our route this year is 30 km, with a height gain of approx 550m.
